How To Click Train Your Pet

Clicker training is a type of positive reinforcement dog training that uses a handheld device, called a clicker, to communicate the exact moment a dog performs a desired behavior. The clicker makes a distinct, fast sound that is more effective than just saying “good dog” and is used in combination with treats to reinforce the behavior. The sound of the click is associated with the command or reward, so over time, the dog will learn to associate the sound of the click with positive reinforcement. The purpose of clicker training is to help a dog understand what is expected of them and reward them for performing the desired behavior.

Here are some steps on how to click train your pet:

  1. Choose a quiet location to train your pet in.
  2. Have a handful of your pet’s favorite treats ready and the clicker in your hand.
  3. Introduce the Clicker to your pet by pressing it and immediately giving your pet a treat.
  4. Repeat the click/treat combination 5-10 times.
  5. Test your success by clicking when your pet is not paying attention to you.
  6. Teach your pet what the marker means. This step is sometimes referred to as “loading the clicker.”
  7. Use the clicker to train your pet to do different commands such as “sit,” “down,” and “stay.”
