How to Get Your Pet to Trust You

A pet trust is a legally enforceable arrangement created to provide for the care and maintenance of companion animals in the event of the owner’s disability or death. The owner, also known as the grantor or settlor, creates the trust, which can take effect during their lifetime or at death. Pet trusts provide a way for pet owners to ensure the proper care of their animals after they are no longer able to do so themselves.

I. Avoid Surprising Your Dog

  • Make sure your dog knows when you’re about to move or do something.

II. Avoid Eye Contact

  • In many human cultures, it’s polite to meet someone’s eyes. But for most animals, eye contact, especially if it’s sustained, is a threat.
  • Staring at the dog, especially head-on, is very scary for the dog.

III. Be Consistent

  • Maintain a consistent routine with things like feeding schedule, walk times, and play sessions.
  • This allows your dog to have the same expectations throughout the day, building their confidence and reducing any unexpected changes that might upset their sense of well-being.

IV. Offer Treats and Reward Positive Behaviors

  • Tossing some treats around, petting your dog in a positive manner, and using positive reinforcement can help build trust with your dog.
  • Make sure to reward your dog when they display behaviors that you want to encourage.
